It’s time to say goodbye to your old Gmail address from school years

For many users, a Gmail address was created in a hurry during school years and no longer reflects their professional identity or personal image. Google is now addressing this long-standing issue by introducing a major update to Gmail.

With the new changes, users will be able to change their @gmail.com email address without closing their existing account. This means your Google account, YouTube channel, Drive files, and photo archive will remain exactly the same - only your email address will be updated.

Previously, changing an email address required deleting the entire account and starting from scratch, which caused serious inconvenience for real-world use. The new approach removes this limitation and gives users much more flexibility.

How will the new system work?

  • The old email address will not be deleted. It will remain as an alias within the account, and emails sent to the old address will still be received.
  • The email address can be changed only once every 12 months.
  • Each account will have a maximum of three changes in total.
  • The old address will not be assigned to another user and will remain protected for security reasons.
  • The feature will be rolled out gradually via the “My Account” section in the coming weeks.

This update provides a significant convenience, especially for users who want to replace email addresses created years ago that no longer represent who they are today.

Have you already decided which old email address you want to change?
